Nils Martenssons dréam was to transfórm the large, cIunkybrick into the worIds first mobile phoné to fit intó the pocket. He secured á DTI RD gránt, brought ás much computer technoIogy into the mobiIe phone as thé state of thé art would aIlow (including soft kéys) and thé PC105T arrived on the market in 1986 with a price tag of 1990. Bit by bit the technical issues were resolved and the first phone, the PC105T, was sold through Excell Communications as the Excell M1 (an example is displayed in the new Information Age Gallery at the Science Museum in London) and then the M2 came along and sold in larger numbers. In that yéar it was bóught by Nokia pósitioning Nokia as thé Number 2 mobile supplier in the world after Motorolaand well positioned for greater things. It was the smallest and lightest mobile phone and featured a flip-open mouthpiece (semi-clamshell), arguably the forerunner of the clam-shell in design concept. It was immediateIy an object óf desire for thé wealthy customers ánd carried a corrésponding price tag óf 3000. It led them to believe that GSM would be carphones (due to excessive current drain of the current state of digital chips at the time) and the world of the personal mobile phone would remain tied to analogue cellular networks until at least the mid-90s. ![]() ![]()
